Heroin Detox Comes in Many Forms

Are you living with heroin addiction? Is fear of dealing with the withdrawal symptoms at a heroin detox keeping you from getting the treatment you need? The good news is that there are a few different types of heroin detox to choose from, making it easier for you to find one that fits your needs. The bad news is that, though there are a number of medications to ease your discomfort, there will still be some work on your part to deal with some of the more difficult symptoms. This is much easier when you choose a medical heroin detox rather than attempt to quit cold turkey on your own.

The two most basic types of heroin detox are inpatient heroin detox and outpatient heroin detox. Both offer different benefits and different considerations – neither is the right choice for everyone looking for heroin addiction treatment. Which one is right for you?

Outpatient Heroin Detox

Outpatient heroin detox is only available when you opt for one of the medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of opiate addiction: buprenorphine or methadone. Methadone is more heavily restricted by the federal government because it is an addictive narcotic medication often prescribed in pill form to treat chronic pain. In liquid form, it is administered to those in heroin addiction treatment in measured doses by a medical professional each day, doses that are lowered milligram by milligram over time until you are completely free of opiate addiction.

Buprenorphine is prescribed by a doctor for home use in the form of lozenges that dissolve under the tongue and is a better choice for lower-dose heroin addictions. This, too, is regulated by the government, and doctors must be certified to dispense the drug.

No matter which one you choose, they are most effective when combined with psychotherapeutic treatment.

Inpatient Heroin Detox

Inpatient heroin detox is by far the most-often recommended and most comprehensive option. Both of the medications described above are available, but so too is round-the-clock medical care and monitoring. Dosage can be adjusted more quickly and you can rest assured that if you have any difficulties, you will have medical professionals standing by who can help. If you opt for no medication, you have the same health care and psychotherapeutic assistance to help you through the hard part and addiction treatment immediately following – a definite must no matter what type of heroin detox you choose.
